In 2007, the BC First Nations Fisheries Action Plan outlined six key themes and seventy-nine recommendations to advance Indigenous fisheries priorities across the province. The plan led to the creation of the First Nations Fisheries Council of BC (FNFC), established to create a coherent voice for more than 200 First Nations in British Columbia. However, fully implementing the Action Plan’s recommendations required greater financial, human and organizational capacity than the FNFC alone could provide.
The Indigenous Stewardship Fund (ISF) was created in response to that need. As an Indigenous-led, charitable entity of FNFC, ISF is governed by an Indigenous Board of Directors and provides direct resources for Indigenous Nations across BC to advance Theme 3 of the BC First Nations Fisheries Action Plan: Safeguarding Habitat & Responding to Threats.
The mission of the Indigenous Stewardship Fund is to enable Indigenous-led environmental protection and restoration efforts in British Columbia (BC), while deepening public awareness of Indigenous knowledge and environmental responsibility.
