Indigenous Priorities First.

Bridging the Gap

We recognized that existing Federal and Provincial funding programs do not always meet the needs of First Nations. Most of their support focused on fish management, with limited investment in environmental restoration and habitat protection. That’s why our commitment is to put First Nations’ interests in salmon protection and restoration first.

From Need to Action

The Indigenous Stewardship Fund (ISF) was created as the charitable entity of the First Nations Fisheries Council (FNFC) to strengthen FNFC’s capacity, mobilize new funding and directly resource Indigenous-led environmental priorities. Through ISF, First Nations can access sustained investment to restore salmon populations and respond to environmental threats.

How We Advance Indigenous Stewardship

Salmon Resiliency Grant Program

Salmon have long been a cornerstone of Indigenous cultures, providing sustenance, livelihood and deep spiritual meaning. Since the 1970s, salmon populations have declined by over 90%. The Salmon Resiliency Grant Program provides grants to support Indigenous-led salmon and watershed conservation projects across the province, helping build capacity and advance habitat protection efforts.

Climate Emergency Grant Program

Recognizing the urgent environmental challenges posed by climate change on aquatic ecosystems, ISF supports Indigenous communities recover from and adapt to wildfires, droughts, floods, atmospheric rivers and other environmental crisis across their territories in British Columbia (BC).

First Nations Fisheries Legacy Fund

For more than a decade, six First Nations, supported operationally by ISF, have worked together under a shared commitment to protect and restore aquatic ecosystems from the impacts of major infrastructure projects in the Fraser River and Burrard Inlet.

Fraser River 30X30 Challenge

The Fraser River 30×30 Challenge is an initiative to connect Indigenous-led and non-Indigenous-led conservation efforts across the basin, align priorities for action, while building public and political momentum toward protecting 30% of the Fraser River watershed by 2030.
